If you’re looking for the best fall foliage, Vermont is one of the top destinations in New England – or really anywhere.
The real trouble is figuring out which town to go to.
Reader’s Digest picked the 28 places in the U.S. that have the best fall foliage, including one town in the Green Mountain State.
“While the top requirement was vibrant fall foliage, we focused on locations that offer plenty to see and do,” Reader’s Digest said. “Whether you choose to stay at a five-star resort, a small-town bed-and-breakfast or a cute cabin rental, a sublime seasonal escape awaits.”
Here’s the one they picked for Vermont.
Stowe — “autumn escape”
Reader’s Digest picked Stowe, Vermont, as one of the best towns in America for fall foliage because of the variety of experiences you can have in this small little Vermont town. Whether you want a comfy rest from your daily life or a creepy trip full of New England scares, Reader’s Digest said Stowe is the place to be.
Here’s what Reader’s Digest had to say about it: “With its unmistakable mix of fall foliage, history and outdoor activities, Stowe is the epitome of an autumn escape. The best time to see tones of yellow, orange and red? The tail end of September and throughout October. If your trip coincides with Halloween, don’t miss Emily’s Bridge, a historic and, legend has it, haunted covered bridge that makes for a spooky travel destination. After a day of exploration, warm up with a cup of spiced cider before hunkering down at the Brass Lantern Inn.”
Emily’s Bridge, known formally as Gold Brook Bridge, is located on Covered Bridge Road in Stowe, Vermont.
According to the website Vermont History, the bridge is named after a woman named Emily who died at the site of the bridge and continues to haunt the passageway. While no evidence has surfaced on anyone dying on the covered bridge, people have reported seeing apparitions or hearing sounds.
