Airfares for late summer and fall trips are tumbling. Here are 12 of the most enticing options.

Just a couple of days ago, airfares for late summer and fall trips started to tumble.

Not all prices went down, but there were more cities than I could count on both hands. If you’re traveling between August and November, check the rates to your city.

When checking for the best rates, it’s usually the basic economy fare that pops up first. But you have to drill down to see main cabin upcharges to accommodate seat reservations and full mileage credit. The upcharge varies from $30 to $55 each way, depending on the airline.

Here are some of the most popular destinations where prices went down:

1. Anchorage-Seattle: To get the best price, buy a round-trip basic ticket for $278. Until recently, all the rates were one-way. That’s not the case any more. Both Alaska Air and Delta charge $159 for a one-way ticket. Travelers save $40 just by buying a round-trip ticket. Fly between mid-August and Nov. 19. Prices go up around Thanksgiving, then down again between Dec. 4-16.

2. Anchorage-Portland: Alaska Airlines has the nonstop flights and the cheapest rates: $258 round-trip. Delta offers a $278 round-trip fare, stopping in Seattle on the way.

To get a main cabin ticket to Portland on Alaska Air, the price goes up to $368 round-trip. Delta’s main cabin price is less: $338 round-trip. The available dates are the same as Seattle: Aug. 13-Nov. 19 and Dec. 4-16.

3. Anchorage-San Francisco: Both United and Alaska offer nonstop flights for $258 round-trip (basic). United’s bargain rates start on Aug. 13, while Alaska’s kick in a little later, around Aug. 23. The cheapest fares are available until Oct. 2, when the nonstop flights end for the season. After that, the price goes up $10 through mid-November and for early December travel.

Prices to both Oakland and San Jose cost more, from $340 round-trip.

4. Anchorage-Los Angeles: The best prices, from $258 round-trip, are available on Alaska Air’s nonstop flights. Both United and Delta charge just a little more — $278 round-trip — for travel through mid-December, excluding Thanksgiving. Be sure to calculate the upcharge for main. United charges $80 more round-trip. Delta charges $60 more. Alaska Airlines charges $90 more for the nonstop flights.

All of the other L.A.-area flights cost more: Ontario, Burbank, Orange County, Palm Springs, Santa Barbara and San Diego, from $331-$340 round-trip.

5. Anchorage-Phoenix: Alaska Airlines’ nonstop flight is the least-expensive: $258 round-trip for basic, from mid-August to mid-December, excluding Thanksgiving. Both Delta and United offer a similar fare: $278 round-trip. Beware of United’s routing, though: via Chicago!

6. Anchorage-Honolulu: I was excited to see Alaska Air’s nonstop reduced further to as little as $336 round-trip (basic) for travel through early December, excluding Thanksgiving. Instead of continuing to one of the Neighbor Islands like Maui or Kauai, check out the deals to Japan: ZIPAir offers nonstop flights to Tokyo for less than $400 round-trip.

7. Anchorage-Denver: I monitor the price to Denver closely because lots of Alaskans like to go to Colorado. Also, I’ve got relatives there. The prices have been high all summer, but finally are coming down. Fly on United for as little as $327 round-trip, between now and Oct. 1. If you want to fly nonstop in both directions, the cost is more: $358 round-trip on either Alaska Airlines or United.

8. Anchorage-Minneapolis: Sun Country has been the low fare leader between Anchorage and the Twin Cities all summer. The cheapest fares are between July 21 and Sept. 1 for $356 round-trip. Remember: Everything costs more, even your standard carry-on suitcase.

But next month, both Delta and Alaska Airlines offer nonstop flights for even less: $338 round-trip through Sept. 6. Starting on Sept. 7, both Alaska and United offer one-stop flights from $358 round-trip.

9. Anchorage-Dallas: Both Delta and United offer the lowest fares: from $300 round-trip. American Airlines offers a nonstop for just $321 round-trip. Plus, there’s no upcharge for main. So if you’re a real penny-pincher and you don’t mind sitting back by the potty in the middle seat, the basic fare of $300-$315 round-trip will work for you. But for an extra $6-$21, American will pull out all the stops and let you pre-reserve your seat. Pick one.

American’s lower nonstop prices are available Sept. 18-Nov. 20 only.

10. Anchorage-Chicago: Three airlines are offering nonstop flights from Anchorage for $318 round-trip: Alaska, American and United. Alaska Airlines is starting the sale a little earlier, on Aug. 8. United drops its prices a little later, on Aug. 12. American doesn’t start with the lower prices until Sept. 8. The cheapest tickets are available through Nov. 24. Tickets for travel between Nov. 28 and Dec. 16 are a little more: from $338 round-trip.

There’s a difference in the spread between basic and main cabin tickets. United charges an extra $80 for main cabin. Alaska Airlines charges an extra $100 round-trip. American Airlines doesn’t charge any extra. The $318 round-trip price is a main cabin fare.

11. Anchorage-Atlanta: Alaska Airlines is bringing the heat to Delta’s home port: Atlanta’s Hartsfield Airport. Delta is charging between $798 and $1,188 round-trip for nonstop flights. Alaska charges $400 round-trip, including a stop in Seattle. That’s a big difference — and it’s Alaska’s way of signaling Delta that it’s very upset at the lower prices!

When the airlines are mad at each other, the traveler wins.

Alaska’s best fares aren’t available every day. You have to hunt for them on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Wednesdays. But you can find them if you look, all the way through Dec. 17, excluding Thanksgiving.

12. Anchorage-Washington, D.C.: Both Delta and Alaska are offering round-trip tickets to Washington, D.C., from Anchorage for $400 round-trip. United’s nonstop from Anchorage to Dulles Airport costs more: $606 round-trip between Aug. 11 and Sept. 6.

Cheaper prices also are available from Fairbanks to the Lower 48. The price to Seattle is a little less than from Anchorage: $260 round-trip. Several other destinations, including San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix, are available from $279 round-trip.

It’s important to remember that fares are subject to change without notice. When I checked the rules, it states that tickets must be purchased no later than Monday, July 21. Pro tip: Don’t wait until the last minute.

While researching these airfares, I checked the websites of all participating airlines, including American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. I use the Google Flights tool extensively to compare flights and dates. To check fare rules, I use ITA’s Matrix Airfare Search tool.
