Summer’s ending, which means it’s time to look forward to some time off traveling in the fall.
It can be hard to decide on where to visit in New England, with so many destinations touting their fall foliage. But early fall is also one of the best times to head to the beach.
Condé Nast Traveler has picked out the best beach towns on the East Coast to visit during the autumn and picked out one of Rhode Island’s most popular locations.
“Fall is a particularly magical time on the East Coast, when lighthouse lookouts and cliffside walks are bathed in autumnal hues,” the travel publication said.
Here’s the town Condé Nast recommended for fall travel.
Newport – amazing town ‘surrounded by fall foliage’
Condé Nast picked Newport, Rhode Island, for all the fun events, exciting activities, and luxurious mansions that can be found on Aquidneck Island’s ritziest city.
Here’s what Condé Nast said about it: “During September and October, Newport’s three-and-a-half-mile Cliff Walk and iconic Ocean Drive are surrounded by fall foliage, while Queen Anne Square gets loaded with hundreds of pumpkins. Pretend you’re a member of The Gilded Age while sauntering (crowd-free) through The Breakers, Marble House, or The Elms, then head to Newport Vineyards for a taste of spiced wine, or Escobar’s Highland Farm to get lost in a corn maze. The Chanler at Cliff Walk, an iconic hotel that’s as opulent as ever this time of year, puts on an unforgettable Harvest Dinner on September 14, a seasonal feast featuring the very best of Newport’s farmers, fishermen, and artisans.”
One of the perks of traveling in the fall, as Condé Nast notes, is it’s often less crowded than in the summer.
If you’re thinking about heading to the beach while you’re there, Easton’s Beach, also known as first beach, is located so you can easily go for a walk on the beach or go to Cliff Walk to stroll by the mansions.
“Newport is blessed with a beautiful coastline and several public beaches to enjoy surf, sand, and sun. The largest of them is Easton’s Beach – locally known as First Beach,” the website said. “Located on Memorial Boulevard at the start of the City’s famedCliff Walk, Easton’s Beach occupies a 3/4 mile long stretch of sand with board walk and Atlantic facing surf,” Newport city government said.
